How to Update Your Phone Number in NPPES

How to Update Your Phone Number in NPPES

If your practice's phone number has changed, you'll need to update it directly in NPPES (the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System). An outdated phone number on your NPI record can cause provider validation errors during clearinghouse enrollment (e.g., ERA/EDI setup with Claim.MD).

Before You Begin

  1. Have your NPI number handy.
  2. Have your CMS I&A (NPPES/PECOS) username and password ready. These credentials are shared across NPPES, PECOS, and CMS.
  3. Know your current, correct phone number to enter.

If you don't remember your password, use the Forgot Password option on the login page before starting.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Go to the NPPES website and log in with your CMS I&A username and password.

  2. From the home page, click Manage NPIs.

  3. Select your individual NPI record from the list.

  4. Click the Edit button to begin updating your information.

  5. Go to the Profile section, then click the Contact Information tab (second-to-last tab).

  6. Click Edit, then enter your current phone number (and email address, if needed).

  7. Click Save and Continue.

  8. Step through the remaining sections by clicking Next Section. Double-check that your practice address is also correct — this is a common spot for outdated info to go unnoticed.

  9. On the final section, check the box to certify that your information is accurate.

  10. Click Submit.

This process typically takes under 5 minutes.

Confirming Your Update

  1. Go to the NPI Registry (public NPI lookup) and search your NPI.
  2. Confirm your new phone number and address are showing correctly.

You may also receive an automated verification call from CMS to the newly listed number to confirm your identity before the change is fully approved. Please answer this call and follow the prompts.
